Poem by Jaden

I Am Poem by Jaden

I am cool and awesome
I wonder if I could be lego batman
I hear mom
I see a bat
I want to be a teenager
I pretend I am a cop
I feel time
I touch batman
I worry my sister might drown
I cry when I get hurt
I am cool and awesome
I understand I have to be good
I say you are my friend
I dream about bats
I try to work hard
I hope I get an ipod
I am cool and awesome

"I AM" poem by Skyler

I Am Poem by Skyler

I am funny and smart
I wonder when we are going to get a letter
I hear kids talking
I see a clock
I want a house made out of Jello
I am funny and smart
I pretend I'm a flower
I feel like a star
I touch a pencil
I worry not often
I cry when people hit me
I am funny and smart
I understand that my sister can’t come often
I say I love school
I dream about school
I try to be good
I hope I get a pony
I am funny and smart

Hello Families,

Yesterday was a fabulous first day! I enjoyed meeting you all.

The first couple weeks of school will be dedicated to learning the rules and procedures of our classroom. Collectively we came up with three classroom rules. 1. Safety First. Students are to line up at doors and walk calmly into class and in halls. We are practicing self-control. Hands should be kept to themselves and chairs pushed in. 2. Be kind. Students should use kind words at all times. Please encourage your student to help others as well. We will be working all year on being kind and making good choices. 3. Listen and learn from others. The students are practicing raising hands and listening to me and their peers. Please model this behavior at home. Also, the students are aware that they can earn “choice time” for good behavior. Ask them to explain this to you to check for clarification.

In our class we use a “color down” chart. Students who do not follow directions will get a warning and then miss recess. After missing recess students get a call home. Two missed recesses result in a loss of “choice time” for the week. Please ask your student about the rules to reinforce that you are aware of what is happening in our classroom. If you have any questions please to not hesitate to contact me at 510-542-7533 or R_Stern@hotmail.com.

Also, your student will bring home a reading log every night. Encourage them to read and fill out their chart. They can take books from class home too. Please initial next to the title of the book that it was read.

Lastly, we worked on “I am” poems today and most of the students are almost done. They are turning out very well which is proof that this is going to be a great year. Here is a sample:

I Am Poem by Seth

I am brave and smart
I wonder if I can be really good
I hear dynamite
I see a rubber tree
I want a flying disc
I am brave and smart
I pretend I’m an ant
I feel like a cloud
I touch an alien
I worry about my sister
I cry when I get hit hard
I am brave and smart
I understand that I will get a science book
I say hyenas are real
I dream I can fly
I try to do a back flip
I hope I get a toy car
I am brave and smart

Best,

Rebecca

Reminders

Dear Parents and Students,

It was a pleasure meeting most of you today. I can’t wait to meet everyone else. For those of you who couldn’t make it Friday there is a volunteer sign-up sheet on the door of our room (6). If there are any other jobs you’d like to help with feel free to talk with me individually. I would love to accommodate your needs and I can always use an extra pair of hands for reading aloud to students, prepping, organizing etc. If you did not make it on Friday, please brainstorm three academic goals that you have for your student this year. We will write them down when we meet.

In the meantime, please send your student to school on Monday with a reusable cup or water bottle to keep here in our class room. We will leave them by the sink and I will wash them every Friday. Also, if you have any old towels that you’d like to get rid of we can use them in our classroom for projects, spills and in place of paper towels. Thank you!

I am in the process of finishing the September homework calendar. For the first three days of school your student’s only homework will be their reading log, which must be initialed by you. Starting September 1st, the homework calendar will be sent home and also posted in the window. Please make sure your child is clear about the assignments and if you have any questions contact me at R_Stern@hotmail.com or (510) 542-7533.

Best,

Rebecca

Introduction

Hello Students and Families!

My name is Rebecca Stern and I am very excited to be joining the team at Leggett Valley Unified for the 2011-2012 academic school year. I graduated from Cal State University East Bay and earned my teaching credential through Chapman University. I have worked in all types of schools, and I am really thrilled to work in a tight knit community like Leggett, it is an absolutely beautiful area, and I can’t wait to explore nature in my free time. I have felt very welcomed by the staff I have met so far and am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you.

Please begin thinking about the goals you have for your student. When we meet we will list these goals and I will keep them on file to monitor progress throughout the year. It is important that we work together this year for the success of your child. I am eager to learn about your student’s individual needs as well, so please feel free to contact me for anything at R_Stern@hotmail.com.

Secondly, we have much to cover this year. In math, the 3rd graders will be learning how to manipulate numbers. Specifically we will focus on place value, multiplication, division and problem solving. We will begin comparing fractions and decimals, and my goal is that the 3rd graders will walk away with an understanding of how numbers can be represented in various ways. We will also be learning more about measurement including liquid volume and weight, learning about complex shapes and beginning to understand angles.

In second grade, we will be working with place value, working on estimation, and learning how to add numbers with 3 digits. We will be practicing using our head to solve simple math problems. We will begin learning through pictures about multiplication. We will work towards knowing all of our 2, 5, and 10s multiplication facts by memory. We will begin to understand that fractions and decimals are part of a whole and be working with coins and bills to help with this representation. Most importantly we will be learning how to solve problems in different ways and self-check a problems validity. Your student will practice estimating when problem solving. We will learn about time and measurement, specifically using different tools to measure. We will also cover shapes, for example, cubes, pyramids, and rectangular prisms. We will use graphs when comparing information.

As you can see we have much to cover, these are just some of my goals for math alone.

Briefly, we will be reading and writing a lot. I am also excited to explore the nature in Leggett for science and history purposes. Your students will be learning about their link to the past. We will focus on text-to-world, text-to-text and text-to-self connections.

I will have a homework calendar ready as soon as possible along with a volunteer sign-up sheet. I welcome any help in our classroom. In the meantime, please read to your child and have them read to you as often as possible. It is just as important for them to hear you read as it is for them to practice themselves.

Looking forward to a wonderful school year!

Best,

Rebecca Stern
