Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to my students, friends and their families.

Please make sure students are reading at least 30 minutes a night. This is the most important thing your child can do to increase comprehension and fluency.

Here are some reading tips:

Adults can read aloud to the student. Children need to hear how we read with inflection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inflection).

Use the 3-5 finger strategy when helping a child choose a book.
Picture Pages:
1. Put up three fingers.
2. Put down a finger for each word you don’t know.
3. If you run out of fingers before you run out of page, this book has too many hard words.
Pages Without Picture:
1. Use all five fingers on your hand.
2. Put down a finger for each word you don’t know.
If you run out of fingers before you run out of page, it’s too hard.

*We also call this the "goldilocks" strategy.

Make reading part of your bedtime routine.

Choose books your student likes...reading should be fun!

Use raz-kids (you may use the school lab or our classroom to log on).

Happy Reading!

-Rebecca

Thursday, November 17, 2011

Hello Panther Parents,

The first quarter has come and gone and I have been doing much reflecting. I am so excited about the progress your student has made and I look forward to the rest of the year.
We are beginning a new online program called “Raz-kids.” Raz-kids is a virtual library catered to your student’s individual reading level. Students can read and listen to different types of books and I can monitor their progress simply by logging on to any computer. Students progress as their comprehension of that level gets better. I just wanted to give you the heads up that the students are very excited about this new program and may be talking about it. Contact me if you have any questions.
Lastly, we are beginning to plan our holiday parties. We will be performing a play and song for the Christmas Pageant if all goes as planned. If you would like to help please contact me ASAP at school or via cell so we can get the ball rolling. I know a few of you expressed some interest in helping and I know who you are. I will call you soon to go over details.

-Rebecca

P.S. Please schedule a time to come in and visit if at all possible. The students love showing off their work. They respond positively to all the great support you give them.

Thank you!!

Updates

Hi Everyone,

Wow we had a busy October! I can not believe our first quarter of school flew by. I am looking forward to conferences this week with you all.

This month HW packets will go out weekly. Students will take home packets Monday and return on Friday. Please only help your student clarify directions for HW. The packets should be done independently. If your student does not understand, please have him/her see me.

The beginning of next month students will be required to teach something to their peers for a presentation grade. Students can teach anything from "how to feed a baby" to "how to play a game." Keep an eye out for information on this project. If you need suggestions give me a call at school or 510-542-7533.

See you soon!

Rebecca

Appreciations:

Thank you to Helen and Delina for their donations to our classroom.

Thank you to Briann, Torrey and Brian for chaperoning our overnight trip.

Dear Families,

Please sign and return the new permission slip ASAP. Our new field trip will be an overnight to the bay area. We will leave November 2nd and return on the 3rd. Chaperones are already set, but please let me know if you’d be interested in chaperoning on future trips.

Also, our biggest fundraiser is set for Veteran’s Day. There is no school this day. We will be teaming with elementary teachers for a pancake breakfast. Please see details on the yellow handout. If you have any questions please contact me or Ms. Campbell.

Lastly, I would like to acknowledge Julie and Sebastion who earned our classroom “character” awards for the month. Julie was given an award for patience. She has been practicing taking her time on work and balancing working with different teachers and support staff. She has done a great job practicing reading at school and at home. Sebastion has earned a character award for enthusiasm. Sebastion shows great enthusiasm at school every day. He is excited to come learn and makes many connections at school and at home.

Awesome October

Hi Families,

Appreciations

I wanted to formally thank Torrey for signing on to volunteer in our classroom Wednesday afternoons.

Thank you to Stephanie for making cupcakes with the class, we are looking forward to more cooking projects.

Thank you to Helen for signing on as our “room” mom. If you have any concerns or questions and do not feel comfortable talking to me, you may always talk to Helen.

*Tomorrow is pajama day. Your student can wear their pajamas!

*We are beginning Halloween crafts and cooking projects. Would you like to come teach about Halloween? Please call me if you are interested.

Lastly, below are a couple concepts your child should be beginning to understand. You can help them at home by keeping an open dialogue about school activities. It helps to create games about these concepts. You’ll be surprised how much a “game” can help them learn.

2nd Grade-
• Place value (example: “36” has 3 tens and 6 ones)
• Less than, greater than, equal to (<, >, =)
• Equivalency (5+4+9 = 9+2+7)
• Sound patterns (example: speak and feet)
• Syllables in words (example: hotel = ho-tel, clap)
• Reading comprehension- Does your student understand what they are reading or hearing?
• Compound words (back + pack = backpack)
• Synonyms (child/kid, big/huge etc)
• Sentence structure (nouns, verbs, adjectives)

3rd Grade- all of the above and…
• Expanded notation (457= 400+50+7)
• Math word problems
• Shapes (hexagon, pentagon, pyramid etc)
• Types of triangles (right, equilateral, scalene, isosceles)
• Parallel lines
• Verb tenses
• Contractions (don’t, aren’t, won’t etc)

Best,

Rebecca

Character Awards

I am happy to announce that our first two character awards were given to Alexis Caetano and Skyler Grant on Friday.

Alexis’ award was given for “courage.” Alexis has been working and trying very hard. She is determined to write well and provides the class with stories she reads in the “author’s chair” that make her friends laugh. I have already seen her take risks in writing in the first two weeks of school.

Skyler was given a character award for “responsibility.” I often catch Skyler helping her peers. All the students in the class go to Skyler first for help if they are unsure about directions or want help spelling a word. She is patient and kind with her peers and always takes the time to explain to them.

I am very proud of both these students. I am always looking for students who exhibit good character.

Congratulations to Alexis and Skyler!

Reminders:

Students should take home their homework folders every day and bring them back the following day. I occasionally add notes for you or permission slips. The book log should stay in the folder at all times.

If your student is out for sickness or vacation please contact me so I can provide some catch-up work for them. Notification to the school (for vacation) is required two weeks beforehand.

Have your student eat plenty of nutritious food and get lots of sleep. I welcome any snack foods for the students for our “afternoon” snack. Please avoid sugary snacks.

Proud Panthers

Hi everyone!

We had a great first week. Please check our blog on a regular basis and feel free to comment on the students' posts. They have been working hard already and I am very proud of them.

Reminders:

The homework calendar should be initialed by you as the assignments are completed. Please also initial your student's reading log.

Students know that they must read every day. Please encourage them.

Please send your student to school with a reusable water bottle or plastic cup. We are trying to "go green" in our classroom.

If you have any old towels to donate please bring them to school. (We will be using them instead of paper towels.)

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact me ASAP as I am trying to finalize our schedule.

Thanks so much, have a great holiday weekend.

-Rebecca

Students earn choice time minutes and can use them on Friday afternoon.

This week we did many activities including math games, computers and writing.
