Hello Families,

Yesterday was a fabulous first day! I enjoyed meeting you all.

The first couple weeks of school will be dedicated to learning the rules and procedures of our classroom. Collectively we came up with three classroom rules. 1. Safety First. Students are to line up at doors and walk calmly into class and in halls. We are practicing self-control. Hands should be kept to themselves and chairs pushed in. 2. Be kind. Students should use kind words at all times. Please encourage your student to help others as well. We will be working all year on being kind and making good choices. 3. Listen and learn from others. The students are practicing raising hands and listening to me and their peers. Please model this behavior at home. Also, the students are aware that they can earn “choice time” for good behavior. Ask them to explain this to you to check for clarification.

In our class we use a “color down” chart. Students who do not follow directions will get a warning and then miss recess. After missing recess students get a call home. Two missed recesses result in a loss of “choice time” for the week. Please ask your student about the rules to reinforce that you are aware of what is happening in our classroom. Also, your student will bring home a reading log every night. Encourage them to read and fill out their chart. They can take books from class home too. Please initial next to the title of the book that it was read.

Lastly, we worked on “I am” poems today and most of the students are almost done. They are turning out very well which is proof that this is going to be a great year. Here is a sample:
